Comparable store sales - those open at least 12 months - rose 6.8 percent in the quarter ended Aug. 1. Comparable data for the stores to provide the best measure of year-on-year performance.
This growth adds to a 6.5 percent increase in comparable sales in the second quarter of 2008. It also continues the momentum Dollar Tree during the recession, as buyers spend more on its all-in-$ 1 at grocery stores and basic household items.
Bob Sasser, CEO of retailer, said customers in the second quarter also collected health and beauty, party and "offers summer." Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, plans to release its complete earnings quarterly results Aug. 26.
